A recent commission: a Nick Lucas Special model body size and some tweaks requested by the client, including slotted headstock, black top, flamed maple bindings, Waverly tuners, and a special headstock inlay supplied by the client. Nick Lucas Specials were made by Gibson in the late 1920s until the late 1930s to the specifications of Nick Lucas, a popular guitarist and crooner whose signature song was "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." The guitars were variously made with mahogany, rosewood, or maple backs and sides. They were a OO body size but the sides were deeper by about an inch. That extra inch makes a world of difference in the sound—more resonance, more volume—and that size body just feels right. A pleasure to build and a great experience working with a professional musician to create just the right instrument!
